Puerto Princesa City, Palawan – Palawan Express Marathonwowed runners, marathon enthusiasts and spectators in Puerto Princesa as itmade history as first-ever full marathon held in the city and the entireprovince of Palawan on Sunday, May 1, 2016.
Over 1,000 runners participated in the marathon with 42K,21K, 10K, 5K and 3K race categories, included were groups from City PhilippineNational Police, Philippine Coast Guard and local government offices. Foreignrunners from Malaysia, Japan and USA also participated in the event thatstarted at Mendoza Park and went along Rizal Avenue to different routes leadingthe runners to enjoy key tourist attractions in the city dubbed as “City in theForest”.
Sixty nine runners in the 42K run started the marathon at1:00 a.m. Gun Time, and among them were 6 Kenyans who swept the top threefinishers for both male and female category. It was Eric Chiseror who finishedfirst at 2:30:59 official time, qualifying him to win an additional cash prize of P50,000 for beatingthe maximum time set by Palawan Express Marathon.
After the run, participants and organizers gathered insidethe People’s Amphitheater in Mendoza Park for an hour of Zumba Session, raffledraw and awarding ceremony. Cash prizes and medals were given to the top threefinishers of 42K and 21K categories, while medals and certificates were awardedto the top three finishers in the 10K, 5K, and 3K runs. Special prizes werealso given to Paul James Zafico from Cebu, with the time of 2:50:45, and NorlanWarizal from Brgy. Tagburos in Palawan, with the time of 3:13:18, for being thefastest Filipino, and fastest Palaweño 42K finishers, respectively.
Palawan Express Marathon was introduced as part of the Palawan Pawnshop andPalawan Express Pera Padala’s commitment to promote healthier lifestyle throughrunning, and other sports development. Present also in the event are thePalawan Pawnshop Board of Directors. In his welcome message, Mr. Roberto BenCastro, Member of the Board, and Over-all coordinator of Palawan ExpressMarathon, promised to hold seriesof marathon, not just in Puerto Princesa but in other parts of thecountry as well.
